Frank Baan

Private Broker

How I work

Certain things ask to be handled quietly. A painting. A classic car. A private collection. Sometimes let go. Sometimes quietly sought.

My background in  automotive taught me how to see what’s there — and what isn’t. Over the years, I developed a kind of instinct: reading the photographs, the phrasing, the hesitations.

Spotting what’s genuine, and what’s being dressed up. A brief phone call often tells me more than a full report.

That same sensitivity now guides my work across a wider range of valuable objects — where clarity, timing and tone matter just as much.

Whether buying or selling, I focus on what holds. Not what dazzles. If something has true quality, it speaks for itself. And if something’s missing, I prefer to hear it — not uncover it later.

That’s how I work. And if that resonates, you’re welcome to get in touch.

Being frank

I didn’t follow a traditional path. I followed what felt real. Looking back, that’s taken me to some unexpected places — and taught me more than I ever planned. Here’s how that unfolded.

FAQs

Below you’ll find a brief overview of how I work — and what you can expect. If your question isn’t listed here, feel free to reach out.

What exactly does a private broker do?

I act as an intermediary in the sale or discreet acquisition of valuable, tangible objects — such as art, design pieces, classic or rare vehicles, or private collections. Each assignment is approached calmly, thoughtfully, and with full discretion.

What types of items do you handle?

Typically, objects with character, provenance, or exceptional quality. These may include artworks, period furniture, bespoke design, rare cars, or items of personal or cultural significance. Often, the story behind the object matters just as much as the object itself.

Do you also work on behalf of buyers?

Yes. In certain cases, I assist private clients in sourcing specific items quietly — particularly when a public search is not desired. I work to match the right object with the right person, without unnecessary exposure.

How is the sale process organised?

It begins with a confidential intake — in person or remotely. After that, I prepare a tailored plan: including photography, presentation text, potential channels, and suitable prospective buyers. The entire process is designed to be clear, calm and respectful.

What are your fees?

My fee structure is transparent. I usually work on a commission basis, with percentages that scale according to the value of the object. Additional services, such as travel, documentation or storage, are agreed upon in advance. You can find full details [here].

Can we schedule an intake conversation?

Absolutely. An initial phone or video conversation is free of charge and without obligation. If appropriate, I can arrange a discreet visit to view the item(s) in question. Only after this do we determine whether collaboration is the right step.

Is everything handled confidentially?

Yes. Confidentiality is not a feature. It’s a given. From the first enquiry to the final handover. Names, details, and circumstances are never shared without explicit consent.

I’m unsure whether my item qualifies. Should I still get in touch?

Of course. Many clients reach out in moments of uncertainty. You’re welcome to ask — even if the answer is simply clarity. I offer honest insight, without pressure.

Do you work internationally?

Yes, depending on the nature of the assignment. I am based in the Netherlands and often work across Europe. Each project is evaluated individually — always with discretion and practicality in mind.

What if I’m dealing with an estate or inheritance?

That requires particular care. Whether it involves a single piece or an entire collection, I approach such assignments with the sensitivity they deserve. I guide the process — calmly, clearly, and with respect for what each item represents.

Where needed, I do not hesitate to bring in trusted specialists — whether for valuation, logistics, or conservation — always in coordination, and always with your consent.

Do you offer valuation services?

I do not provide formal valuations for insurance or tax purposes. However, I offer informal guidance on likely market value and strategic positioning, based on current demand and comparable examples. This includes my own market research.

Do I need to agree to the General Terms and Conditions?

Yes. By engaging my services — whether you’re selling or searching — you agree to the General Terms and Conditions provided at the outset of our collaboration. These outline the scope of work, fees, confidentiality, and the way I operate.

They’re designed to protect both of us and to keep the process clear, fair, and efficient. If anything is unclear or needs adjusting to fit your situation, I’m always open to discussing that beforehand. You'll find them [here]
